DAES tests materials using neutron technology

DAES presents the VULCAN project. The compact pulsed neutron technology is the result of a co-operation between the engineering and consulting company, Danish partners and CERN. It is intended to evaluate the ageing of lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells in particular.

DAES presents its VULCAN project. This is a compact pulsed neutron technology that, according to a press release, has emerged ‘from a committed partnership’ between the engineering and consulting company DAES, based in the canton of Geneva and the Technopark Winterthur, the Danish Technological Institute, the Danish company Xnovo Technologies and the European Nuclear Research Organisation CERN in Geneva.

The goal of this project is to develop a compact, cost-effective and efficient solution for assessing the ageing of metallic and ceramic components. The particular focus is on important technologies such as lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells.

One of the most important aspects of the VULCAN project is the compact neutron source. The technology was developed specifically for industrial applications and represents a non-destructive method for assessing the internal stress in various materials. On the other hand, it enables a wide range of applications. The technology is intended to improve the longevity and efficiency of lithium-ion batteries, investigate fuel cells and also develop complex metallic systems such as superconducting magnets. ce/mm
