The podcast «On Probation: Life with Prison» by the Department of Corrections and Reintegration (JuWe) has won an award in the “Companies & NPOs” category at the Suisse Podcast Awards. The podcast is managed by JuWe’s Communications Department and was produced for the Canton of Zurich in collaboration with Cheyenne Mackay from the Podcastschmiede, based at Technopark Winterthur. With this award, the project now receives special recognition.
Across a total of 13 episodes, the podcast explores a subject area that is often characterized in the public perception by distance, prejudice, and oversimplified notions. «On Probation: Life with Prison» addresses precisely this and offers a nuanced perspective on the world of the correctional system. The format sheds light not only on the structures and processes behind prison walls, but above all on the people navigating this system. “The award demonstrates the value of narrative podcasts. Because it’s not just a simple conversational format. Host Cheyenne Mackay takes the audience on a real journey,” states the Podcastschmiede on its website.
The episodes deliberately explore a variety of perspectives. They range from discussions about the merits and shortcomings of punishment to encounters with incarcerated individuals, and even include a personal experiment with an electronic ankle monitor. It is precisely this diversity that makes the podcast particularly worth listening to. The award thus recognizes not only a successful audio format but also the work of the Podcastschmiede company that created the podcast for the Canton of Zurich.
