Paper Airplanes and a Pioneering Spirit: A Look Back at the First ASCENT Cycle

In October 2024, Technopark Winterthur AG, in collaboration with the ZHAW’s RUNWAY Startup Incubator, launched the new support program “ASCENT Startup Accelerator.” The goal: to help ambitious startups at Technopark Winterthur take their next big steps through targeted measures.

Since its launch in October 2024, the ASCENT Startup Accelerator has generated significant interest. What’s more, it has visibly encouraged founders within the Technopark Winterthur ecosystem to take bold steps. Through its three support components—coaching, rent reductions, and assistance with trade show appearances—ASCENT offers ambitious startups the opportunity to drive their growth in a targeted manner.

“Our goal was to create a support program that meets the specific needs of startups: fast, flexible, and effective. After a year, we can say that the concept has been very well received,” said Stève Mérillat, Managing Director of Technopark Winterthur.

Up to four measures, each worth CHF 2,500, can be claimed per year. The funding period lasts twelve months and can be extended up to two times. Even startups that have not yet moved into Technopark can apply now and thus benefit from day one.

Taking off with ASCENT: Five Startup Stories

The first success stories demonstrate just how much momentum a year in the ASCENT program can generate. A total of eight startups have been accepted into the support program since October 2024, and they have made significant strides in their development during this time.

Ökostrom Schweiz, the association of agricultural biogas producers with over 200 members, is driving the smart marketing of renewable energy through the program via its subsidiary Fleco Power AG.

Swiss Birdradar Solution AG has initiated patent and certification processes with ASCENT and is preparing to enter the market in Europe, the U.S., and Australia, as well as establishing strategic partnerships.

RELiYOO refined its business model centered on a sensor-based wheelchair cushion designed to prevent pressure ulcers, successfully tested the product with pilot customers, and formed partnerships.

Vigilitech achieved its first international sales with MARTA, a device for contactless vital sign monitoring in laboratory animals, and is now expanding its portfolio and scaling up operations.

Sympheny implemented projects with energy suppliers and engineering firms, received an Innosuisse grant for AI innovations, and is now supporting another company in implementing the energy strategy outlined in the framework decree.

Partnership with RUNWAY Incubator

A key factor in the program’s success is its close collaboration with the ZHAW’s RUNWAY Startup Incubator. While RUNWAY supports founders in the early stages, ASCENT steps in at the crucial next stage—where scaling and market entry come into play. Thanks to the shared network of coaches, startups benefit from continuous support that spans from the first prototype to international expansion.

“ASCENT and RUNWAY fit together seamlessly. This gives founders the assurance that they will receive expert guidance throughout their entire journey, from the initial idea to scaling up,” says Mélanie Binggeli, Project Manager at RUNWAY Incubator.

Concept Confirmed – Goal Defined

After more than twelve intensive months, it is clear that ASCENT is more than just a support program—it is a springboard for ambitious founders who are ready to take their ideas to the next level. In the coming year, the program is set to gain even greater visibility. The experiences and feedback from the first round are being directly incorporated into its further development.

The goal remains unchanged: to support startups in their growth, enable innovation, and further establish Winterthur as a strong hub for entrepreneurship.
