The start-up Sympheny, led by co-founder Andrew Bollinger, focuses on energy supply solutions. Bollinger and his team have developed a platform that uses intelligent algorithms to help energy planners optimize the energy supply for buildings and entire neighborhoods.
With the help of the platform developed by Sympheny, improvement solutions can be developed, planned and implemented. Another important point is that surplus and, in particular, renewable energy can be used smartly, stored or even forwarded.
Met at the ETH
Sympheny was founded in April 2020 as a spin-off of the Urban Energy Systems Laboratory at Empa, an institute of ETH. Sympheny’s four co-founders – Andrew Bollinger, Matthias Sulzer, Boran Morvaj and Julien Marquant – are former Empa colleagues with complementary specializations in data science, simulation and energy planning. The team combines in-depth knowledge of the technologies important to the project with expertise in the energy sector and business development, as well as experience from the start-up industry.
Finding the best energy system design
The Sympheny platform enables energy planners to automatically find the best energy system design among thousands of options. Using the technology, it is possible to define exactly what energy can be imported, what resources should be used on site, and what the energy demand is. The optimization algorithms then search through a wide variety of utility system configurations to find the optimal solution for the user. This often allows projects to be implemented in a more energy-efficient manner and with lower CO2 emissions.
Technopark focuses on energy start-ups thanks to cluster initiative
Technopark Winterthur and the city of Winterthur are focusing on the energy, health and machinery clusters. The “Smart Energy” cluster focuses on topics such as energy efficiency, renewable energies, sustainable transport, climate neutrality and the circular economy. That is why Technopark Winterthur is all the more pleased to have start-ups like Sympheny as tenants and also to promote them. After all, smart supply solutions will continue to be an important goal for the Winterthur economic region in the future and thus, of course, also for Technopark Winterthur itself.
